High Performance Visualization and Virtual Reality Centre

Leading the Way in Virtual Reality

vipl.jpg

MVC offers a premier centre for High Performance Visualization and Virtual Reality to all members of the University under a system of internal review.

The centre provides a graphics hardware upgrade Escher to a previously existing HPC facility managed by Manchester Computing, and a curved screen Immersive Projection Theatre called the VIP Laboratory (Visualization Immersive Projection Laboratory). The system features a 6 channels surround sound audio system, Integrator 3 control and is compatible with active matrix stereographic glasses and emitters. The fully integrated stereoscopic display system was installed by Virtalis in 2000.

A number of research areas in both earth, life and physical sciences can now take significant steps forward through the use of visual supercomputing.

The centre combines high-performance graphics, computing and data management technology to solve complex research problems that were unapproachable only a few years ago.
